What's inside
This book presents statistical methods from a medical perspective, emphasising their application in clinical research and healthcare decision-making. It prioritises the medical and bio components over the statistical, ensuring accessibility for medical professionals. The fifth edition streamlines content while maintaining comprehensive coverage of essential biostatistical concepts. Further details of intricate methods are available online for those interested. Includes newer methods regarding agreement assessment, assessment of predictivity of models, SAMPL guidelines for reporting, lower P-values, sample size, machine learning models, personalised statistical medicine, etc. Offers new insights on the need for medical significance, studies on small samples, assessment of clinical agreement, correct assessment of prediction models, AI in research methods, and measurement of positive health. Covers research methodology, clinimetrics, quality of research, and statistical fallacies, with focus on medical applications rather than statistical theory. Presents probability, odds ratios, ordinary and logistic multivariable regressions, ROC curves, predictivities, confidence intervals, parametric and nonparametric tests, survival analysis, sample sizes for different setups, introduction to multivariate methods such as discriminant functions, cluster analysis, and factor analysis, and more. Provides summary tables guiding readers on method selection - an extremely user-friendly feature. Every chapter includes medical case studies and exercises. Solutions to selected exercises are provided. In addition, solution of intricate problems using R-software, and other additional material is available online. This book is for students, professionals, and practitioners in statistics, medicine, pharmacy, and nursing. This book is a comprehensive resource for medical researchers seeking statistical guidance for their studies.
